  • Temporal context: Is this activity happening at an unusual time? Is the rate of API calls anomalous? Are multiple unusual activities happening in sequence?

Only by correlating these dimensions can you distinguish between legitimate activity and threats. Let me give you a real example I investigated:

A legitimate Lambda function regularly accesses a specific S3 bucket to process uploaded files. One day, that same Lambda function begins accessing multiple other S3 buckets it has never touched before, downloading significantly more data than normal, and doing so at 3 AM on a Sunday. CloudTrail shows valid credentials and proper authorization—the API calls succeed. But the context reveals this is an attack: the Lambda function was compromised through a dependency vulnerability, and the attacker is using its broad IAM permissions to exfiltrate data.

7. What is contextual correlation in cloud security?

Contextual correlation is the process of connecting multiple security signals across different domains; identity, network, compute, storage, data – to detect threats that wouldn’t be visible when examining any single signal in isolation.

Think of it like this: in traditional perimeter-based security, you watched network traffic for malicious patterns. An attacker trying to exfiltrate data generated unusual network flows – large data transfers to external IPs, connections to known malicious domains, unusual protocols. These network signals were often sufficient for detection.

In cloud environments, attacks rarely have distinctive network signatures. Data exfiltration often looks like legitimate API calls. Privilege escalation happens through IAM modifications, not exploited services. Lateral movement occurs through role assumption, not network propagation. You can’t detect these attacks by watching any single security domain.

Here’s a concrete example of contextual correlation:

  • Signal 1 (Identity): A service account assumes a role it has never assumed before. By itself, this might be legitimate – perhaps a new feature was deployed that requires this role assumption.
  • Signal 2 (Compute): The EC2 instance using this service account recently had a security group modified to allow inbound SSH from the internet. By itself, this might be a misconfiguration but not necessarily an active threat.
  • Signal 3 (Network): The EC2 instance establishes outbound connections to an IP address it has never contacted before, in a geographic region where the bank has no operations. By itself, this could be a new vendor integration or API dependency.
  • Signal 4 (Data): API calls from this instance begin accessing S3 buckets containing customer financial data – buckets this instance has never accessed in its normal operation. By itself, this could indicate new application functionality.
  • Signal 5 (Volume): The rate of S3 GetObject API calls increases dramatically, and the total data transfer volume is 100x higher than the instance’s historical baseline. By itself, this could be a legitimate bulk export or reporting job.

Each individual signal might not justify a high-severity alert. Most security tools would either not alert on these individually (they’re within acceptable thresholds) or would generate five separate low-priority alerts that never get investigated.

Contextual correlation connects these signals into a single narrative: this instance has been compromised (evidence: inbound SSH from internet), the attacker gained persistence and elevated permissions (evidence: new role assumption), and is now exfiltrating sensitive customer data (evidence: unusual S3 access patterns, high data transfer volume, external network connection).

This correlated detection generates a single, high-confidence alert that immediately tells security teams what happened, what data is at risk, and what needs to be contained. This is actionable intelligence, not raw telemetry.

Implementing contextual correlation requires several technical capabilities:

Unified data model: All security signals must be normalized into a common format that preserves relationships. This means understanding that an API call, a network connection, and a resource configuration change are all events related to the same identity and resource.

Graph-based relationships: Cloud environments are inherently relational. IAM roles are attached to EC2 instances, which exist in VPCs, which peer with other VPCs, which contain RDS databases, which store data with specific classifications. 9. Why is IAM the biggest risk for banks on cloud?

This represents a massive shift in attack patterns. In cloud environments, the majority of security incidents I’ve investigated trace back to identity issues:

Over-permissioned service accounts: Developers often grant overly broad permissions to service accounts because it’s faster than determining the minimal required permissions. A Lambda function that needs to read from one specific S3 bucket gets granted s3:* permissions across all buckets “just in case.” When that Lambda function is compromised through a dependency vulnerability, the attacker inherits those excessive permissions.

Long-lived credentials: Access keys that never expire are ubiquitous. Developers create them for testing, forget about them, commit them to repositories, store them in unsecured locations. These credentials provide persistent access even after the associated project ends or the developer leaves the organization.

Credential exposure: Cloud credentials leak constantly – in GitHub repositories, in container images, in configuration files, in error logs. Automated bots scan for these exposed credentials and exploit them within minutes of exposure.

Privilege escalation paths: IAM permission models are complex. It’s remarkably easy to create unintended privilege escalation paths – for example, granting iam:PassRole permission that allows a service account to grant itself additional permissions by passing a more privileged role to a new resource.

Cross-account access chains: In multi-account architectures (which most banks use for environment and team separation), IAM roles can assume roles in other accounts. If these trust relationships aren’t carefully managed, an attacker who compromises a low-privilege account in a development environment might be able to pivot to production accounts through role assumption chains.

Here’s a real pattern I see repeatedly: A bank implements good network security—private subnets, security group restrictions, VPC endpoints. Individually, none of these are critical. Together, they form an attack path: exploit the SSH vulnerability to gain access to the instance, use the instance’s IAM role to access S3, exfiltrate customer data. Each misconfiguration lowered a security barrier, and the combination eliminated all barriers.

Example 2: The Credential Exposure Chain

  • Misconfiguration A: Application logs contain debug information
  • Misconfiguration B: Debug information includes temporary AWS credentials
  • Misconfiguration C: Logs are stored in S3 with overly permissive read access
  • Misconfiguration D: The temporary credentials have elevated permissions that haven’t expired

The attack: access the logs, extract the credentials, use them before they expire. Again, each individual issue might not trigger a critical alert, but the combination creates an exploitable vulnerability.

Example 3: The Identity Privilege Escalation

  • Misconfiguration A: Service account has iam:PassRole permission
  • Misconfiguration B: Service account has lambda:CreateFunction permission
  • Misconfiguration C: An administrative IAM role exists with broad permissions
  • Misconfiguration D: The trust policy on the administrative role allows it to be passed to Lambda

The attack: create a new Lambda function, pass the administrative role to it, execute the Lambda function to perform privileged operations. The service account never had administrative permissions directly, but the combination of permissions allowed privilege escalation.

Detecting toxic combinations requires several capabilities that traditional security tools don’t provide:

  • Attack path analysis: Understanding how different resources and permissions connect to form potential attack chains. This requires building a graph of cloud resources, their relationships, their permissions, and their exposures—then analyzing paths through this graph that lead to sensitive data or privileged operations.
  • Multi-dimensional correlation: Evaluating misconfigurations across different security domains simultaneously—identity permissions, network exposure, data sensitivity, vulnerability status, configuration compliance. A high-severity toxic combination might involve issues spanning all five domains.
  • Risk prioritization: Not all combinations represent equal risk. A toxic combination that provides a path to test data is categorically different from one that provides a path to production customer financial data. Prioritization requires understanding data classification, production versus non-production environments, and business impact.

The gap between granted permissions and used permissions is enormous in most cloud environments. I’ve seen banks where service accounts have been granted administrative access to dozens of services but only actually use three or four of those permissions in their entire operational lifetime. The unused permissions represent pure attack surface – if the service account is compromised, the attacker inherits permissions the legitimate application never needed.

This happens for understandable reasons. When developers are moving fast, it’s easier to grant broad permissions than to determine the precise minimal set required. AWS IAM has thousands of possible permissions across hundreds of services. Figuring out exactly which permissions are needed often requires trial and error – grant permissions, test the application, see what fails, grant additional permissions, repeat. It’s faster to just grant s3:* than to figure out whether you need s3:GetObject, s3:PutObject, s3:ListBucket, and s3:GetBucketLocation for specific bucket ARNs.

The security risk compounds over time. Applications change. The S3 access that was needed six months ago might not be needed anymore, but the permissions remain. Developers leave the organization. The service accounts they created persist with the permissions they granted. Nobody removes permissions because nobody wants to risk breaking something by being too restrictive.

Detecting unused permissions requires two capabilities: permission analysis and behavioral monitoring.

Permission analysis means parsing IAM policies to understand exactly what each identity is authorized to do. This is more complex than it sounds. Why CVSS scores alone don’t work in banking environments

CVSS scores were designed to provide a standardized way to communicate the severity of vulnerabilities. A CVSS 9.8 critical vulnerability should be more severe than a CVSS 4.2 medium vulnerability, regardless of who’s doing the assessment. In theory, this helps prioritize remediation efforts.

In practice, CVSS scores are nearly useless for prioritization in real banking cloud environments. Here’s why:

  • CVSS doesn’t account for exposure. A critical vulnerability in a system that’s completely isolated from the internet and behind multiple network controls is categorically different from the same vulnerability in a publicly exposed API gateway. CVSS treats them identically.
  • CVSS doesn’t account for exploitability. A vulnerability might have a high CVSS score because the potential impact is severe, but if there’s no known exploit, no active exploitation in the wild, and exploitation requires complex preconditions that don’t exist in your environment, it’s a lower practical priority than a medium CVSS vulnerability that has active exploit code available.
  • CVSS doesn’t account for compensating controls. You might have a vulnerable application, but if it’s behind a properly configured WAF that blocks the exploit attempts, or if runtime application self-protection (RASP) would prevent exploitation, or if network segmentation prevents post-exploitation lateral movement, the practical risk is much lower.
  • CVSS doesn’t account for asset criticality. A critical vulnerability in a development test environment is different from the same vulnerability in production systems processing customer transactions.

I’ve seen banking security teams try to remediate vulnerabilities strictly by CVSS score and end up in an impossible situation. They have thousands of “critical” vulnerabilities according to CVSS. They don’t have the engineering resources to patch everything. So they end up either patching randomly (fixing the easy ones first, regardless of actual risk) or patching nothing (paralyzed by the overwhelming volume).

Effective vulnerability prioritization requires contextual scoring that considers:

  1. Exploitability: Is there public exploit code available? Is the vulnerability being actively exploited in the wild? Has it been added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog? Does it have a working proof-of-concept?
  2. Exposure: Is the vulnerable system accessible from the internet? Is it in a DMZ? Is it internal-only? What network paths exist to reach it? What authentication is required?
  3. Data access: Can the vulnerable system access sensitive data? If exploited, what’s the blast radius in terms of customer data, financial information, or intellectual property?
  4. Lateral movement potential: If this system is compromised, what can the attacker pivot to? Does it have IAM permissions that enable accessing other resources? Are there shared credentials or trust relationships?
  5. Compensating controls: What other security layers exist? WAF rules? Runtime protection? Network segmentation? Monitoring and alerting that would detect exploitation attempts?

Modern vulnerability management platforms incorporate these factors into risk-based scoring. Instead of showing you 10,000 vulnerabilities sorted by CVSS, they show you the 50 vulnerabilities that represent genuine risk in your specific environment – vulnerabilities that are both severe and exploitable given your configurations, exposures, and controls.

Prioritizing exploitable vulnerabilities requires combining vulnerability intelligence with environmental context:

  • Exploit intelligence: Start with authoritative sources on active exploitation. CISA’s KEV catalog lists vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild. Threat intelligence feeds provide information on exploit availability, ransomware campaigns using specific vulnerabilities, and industry-specific targeting. These sources help identify which vulnerabilities attackers are actually using, not just which ones are theoretically severe.
  • Reachability analysis: Just because a vulnerability exists in your environment doesn’t mean it’s exploitable. A vulnerability in a library that your application imports but never actually calls isn’t exploitable in your specific case. Runtime analysis and software composition analysis can determine whether vulnerable code paths are reachable given how your application is actually used.
  • Network exposure: Internet-facing resources should be prioritized higher than internal resources. But “internet-facing” is more nuanced than it sounds in cloud environments. A vulnerable Lambda function with read-only permissions to a single DynamoDB table is lower risk than a vulnerable EC2 instance whose IAM role can access all S3 buckets in the account.
  • Data access proximity: How many hops from the vulnerable resource to sensitive data? A vulnerable web server that directly accesses a customer database is higher priority than a vulnerable internal tool that would require multiple privilege escalations to reach sensitive data.

Here’s how this works in practice with a cloud-native platform:

An automated vulnerability scanner identifies CVE-2024-XXXXX in a container image. CVSS score: 9.1 (Critical). Traditional approach: create a critical priority ticket, escalate to engineering, demand immediate patching.
